“The shop for free idea is that people can have an experience of shopping, to say we don’t want to just dump people with clothes that we don’t want, but we want to give people an opportunity to come shop and choose what they want.

Sometimes we take for granted that we are all able to shop, but actually not everybody can,” commented Shosho Mmutlana, Head of Hands of Restoration in the Roodepoort Campus.

The initiative has expanded over the years, reaching more communities and is one of initiatives that the church hosts across all the Hope Restoration Ministries campuses aimed at giving back.

Miriam Tenyane, National Head of the outreach project said the initiative was aimed to encourage and give hope to the community and to keep hope alive in the midst of trying times.

“Year in and year out, we have been humbled to see the quality of the clothes that the members of the church continue to give.

“We want to feel like they are in one of the retail stores therefore we cannot choose for them, they know their body, needs and that of those children,” she adds.

At least over 400 people who made their way to the initiative walked away with heaps of clothing.

“Our theme for this year is ‘Revolution’ which means things are changing and this is evident in what we do. When we say things are changing, we say it cannot just be that we have another handover, but can we remind those that continue to want and seek God,” concluded Tenyane.

Silibaziso Ndlovu (25) from Zimbabwe expressed her gratitude to the church citing the clothes would go a long way for her as she was unemployed.

“I am happy that today we got clothes especially for my two-year-old child. We thank the church for coming because I don’t work, I cannot afford to buy clothes at times so being here today is a true blessing,” said the mother of one.
