The young wordsmith who was born and bred in Dobsonville set about her poetry journey from as early as four-years-old reciting bible scriptures for her family.

That soon changed when she took to performing her pieces at church soon after.

“From as early as we can remember, she was fantasied during Bible reading.

“At the time she couldn’t read but she would be so interested and excited and ask us to read for her again. As young as four years she already knew psalms 23,” her mother, Bongi Mphela recalls.

The poetess began writing her own poems at the age of seven or eight years, writing motivation and Christian Biblical poetry, positively shaping and appreciating the world from her innocent lens.

“I like that when I’m on stage, I can see everyone and everyone’s attention is on me. I don’t get nervous. I just take a deep breath, and tell myself that I can do this and people are always friendly,” Little Masego said.

The young poet who is currently in Grade five juggles schools and performing on stages of public gatherings, in church events, corporate events and sometimes open mic sessions.

Her parents said their daughter was always eager to showcase her talent to new audiences. They added that they were beaming with pride and were thrilled to see where her poetry will land her in a few years.

“We are very supportive of her dreams. We always make sure that she has enough time to rehearse and give criticism. We are happy that at such a young age she could identify something that she loves,” they said.

“We want to see her not just as a young aspiring poet but to be dubbed the people’s poet- to be recognised on the big stages.”

When the young poetess is not on stage, she is at home running over her bakery business, Mase Delicacies, deriving from her name, which was founded in 2020 when she was only seven years old.

According to the family, her determination was one of the reasons which informed the family’s decision to turn Masego’s love for baking into a formal business.

“I want to be the boss. I don’t want to go and look for work but people must come to me to look for jobs,” young Masego shared.

Her mother added, “She told us that she won’t work for anyone but she will be a businesswoman.

“We formalised it after we saw that this was something that she loves doing. It also empowers her and teaches her responsibility and money management.”
