Beloved Diepkloof elder laid to rest

In 2018 to 2012 he served as the chairperson for the DA in ward 28 and later moved to join Action SA and was also part of the senior citizen forum and a leader of the Soweto Business Men Forum.

Family, friends and comrades gathered to honour the late Patrick ‘Bra Pat’ Maboa (75) who recently passed away.

Known for advocating for residents in the area, especially elderly people, his celebration of his life took place at his home in Diepkloof Zone 1 and was followed by a funeral service which was held at YMCA Hall on March 30.

Described as a family man by his colleagues, Maboa also served as a board member at YMCA from 2009 where he organised refuge for young men seeking escape from being the on the streets.

According to Tsepo Mhlongo, a Member of Parliament who worked closely with Maboa, they have learned a lot from him including his leadership qualities and the love he had for the community.

“We saw him as a father because he was always there for us when we needed advice and a shoulder to cry on. For some of us, working with him taught us the importance of showing humanity to everyone- young or old,” Mhlongo said.

From 2018 to 2021 he served as the chairperson for the DA in Ward 28 and later moved to join ActionSA and was also part of the senior citizen’s forum and a leader of the Soweto Business Men Forum.

Maboa is also remembered by his religious family where he served as a member of the Ways Christian Bible Church where he also attended his bible classes.

”We are grateful to had to spent time with him and gain as much knowledge as we could from him.

Maboa spend most of his life time serving as a community leader in the area.

“We also express gratitude that both ceremonies went well and to all the people who took their precious time to join us as we lay our legend to rest.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone who looked up to him, especially his family, colleagues and close friends.

“We will continue carrying the knowledge he bestowed in us and ensure that his legacy lives on,” said Mhlongo.

As part of his work as a community leader, Maboa encouraged and implemented the idea of having a soup kitchen for elderly people in the area where he ensured that they have sufficient meals before they can take their chronic medication.

“Elderly people were always close to his heart, if there was a place he would be for the day it would be surrounded by elderly people and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace, his love, wisdom and care will be dearly missed,” concluded Mhlongo.
