Putco decides against suspending operations

Putco says bus operations will continue as per normal on Monday, March 20 despite an earlier decision not to.

The bus company revised its decision to halt bus operations following an urgent meeting between the Minister of Transport, her Deputy, senior government and the executives of the Southern Africa Bus Operators Association (SABOA) on Thursday.

It states that, during the meeting, bus operators were urged to treat Monday as a normal business day.

“The Minister implored Putco and other bus companies to operate and assured them that sufficient security measures were in place for the safety of passengers, staff, and the general public during the National Shutdown,” it wrote in a statement.

It further added that government provided that all efforts have been made to ensure that law will be maintained so that economic activities are not affected by the shutdown.

“Putco will operate a normal service as far as possible on Monday.

“We assure our passengers and staff that we will monitor the situation closely and should it become unsafe, services will be suspended immediately.”

On Thursday, the bus company released a statement citing that bus operations would be suspended on Monday, March 20 due to safety concerns linked to the National Shutdown.

It had also announced that there would be reduced services on March 21, while full bus operations would resume on 22 March.

At the time, it cited its decision to suspend its services as a precautionary measure after in-depth analysis uncovered threats of intimidation.
