Pre-Human Rights Day Commemoration held at local school

Teacher Liaison Officer, Nosipho Mthalane applauded Applegreen and his team for the community work they are doing in local schools.

Rock Apple Fashion took its first leg of ‘Exposing Students’ Talents School Tour’ to Sebetsa-O-Tholemoputso Secondary School, on March 13.

The purpose of the event was to do a pre-commemoration of Human Rights Day by showcasing the learner’s talents as the Soweto institution while raising funds for their school choir.

Rock Apple Fashion, which is owned by Gift Applegreen, a former learner of Sebetsa-O-Tholemoputso Secondary School took to the stage with a fashion show that showcased exclusive designs of various local brands such as Black Panther and Thee Spontaneous Royalty.

Applegreen who is also based in the area said the event was about enhancing and nurturing the talents of students at the School while exposing them to potential career streams to explore in fashion post high school.

Commenting on their support for the event, Applegreen said, “This is a movement aimed at allowing learners a platform.

“The programme is centred around them and executed by them through promoting them to cultivate their interests and abilities.”

The host of activities that were happening during the event included a commemoration programme that paid homage to the country’s rich history, reflecting on the events of Sophiatown. This also included a fest of performing arts display of dance, music and poetry by the learners.

“The Exposing Students’ Talents School Tour was the beginning of it at Sebetsa-O-Tholemoputso Secondary School, we have four more schools to go around Snakepark before expanding it to other schools outside,” Applegreen added.

Sibongile Tshabalala, the president of Sebetsa-O-Tholemoputso Secondary School said they were thrilled the school was chosen to be a part of the initiative.

“The event was part of the school work aimed at empowering and educating the students while fighting against human rights violation,” said Tshabalala.

“As a Representative Council of Learners, what is even more exciting is that it started here and today were able to have learners inspired through the programme.”
