The Eastern Cape born and breed and now Orlando East resident is proud of the decision he made of dropping out from his Information Technology (IT) course at the university in 2018.

Yawa now makes income by selling snacks at Bara taxi rank as well as pushing on his music career and his clothing brand known as No Go To Room.

According to Yawa, he discovered his passion for music in 2008 as a result of the inspiration he got from legends such as Tupac Shakur which led him to recording his first song titled Angels of Hip Hop in 2009.

“I have always been a business minded person and school was never my passion. After completing matric, I applied late at the university which led to choosing IT which was never my passion. I then made a sole decision to quit and focus on what I love the most – music,” Yawa said.

When describing his childhood, he says it is one that was filled with a lot of memories, from good to bad.

“I was raised by both parents with my father being the sole provider and working a decent job at the time. After losing his job, thing started being difficult for us as we started experiencing great hardships.”

Yawa added that things such as buying clothes for the festive seasons became a luxury for them as his parents fought to put bread on the table.

“The struggles of my upbringing somehow made me want to focus more on business as a result of dropping out of school, but overall I was never passionate about the course I chose and I wanted to focus on my passions.”

Throughout his music career, Yawa has scored various achievements and was nominated on several occasions including for the Best Upcoming Artist at the GAMA Awards, Best Hip Hop artist at the Live Your Dream Awards which was held at Durban Play House Theatre and the Best Mix Tap for his track Pass Word in 2019.

“Being in the industry has been a process of discovery for me but most importantly, it has shown me how smart and strong I am for choosing to follow my dreams.”

His parents however, did not take his decision of quitting school well and still encourage him to further his studies.

“This was a sole decision that I believe I will never re great because music is what I love.”

Yawa is calling on Sowetans to help support his music ambition and career by purchasing his new mix tape as well as supporting his business and clothing brand.

“When searching for the good in us, we undergo different seasons and there is a reason for that.

“For young people out there, I would like to encourage them to chase their dreams and to never let others tell them otherwise.”
