JMPD officer stable after being hit by drunk driver

Preliminary information indicates that officer Zwidfhela Daniel Singo signalled for the vehicle, a white Hyundai H100 dropside which was speeding to stop, but the male driver failed and collided into officer Singo.

A JMPD officer was left hospitalised after allegedly being hit by a car at Soweto Highway under the railway bridge in Mzimhlophe on February 12.

According to information provided by JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla the driver of the vehicle was allegedly drunk during the incident.

Officer Singo sustained serious injuries to the head and back.

“Preliminary information indicates that officer Zwidfhela Daniel Singo signalled for the vehicle, a white Hyundai H100 which was speeding to stop, but the male driver failed and collided into officer Singo,” Fihla said.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the incident and allegedly crashed into a vehicle at the Soweto Highway and Klipspruit Valley Road traffic circle.

“Officers who were on scene promptly responded to the incident by chasing after and arresting the driver.”

The driver was breathalysed as he was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and his breathalyser reading was 0.73 mg/l which is above the legal limit of 0.24 mg/l.

“The 55-year-old male was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and failing to stop at an accident scene. He was detained at Orlando SAPS where a case docket has been opened for further investigation.”

Officer Singo sustained serious injuries to the head and back.

He was airlifted to Milpark Hospital and he is currently in a stable condition.

“The JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Angie Mokasi wished officer Singo a speedy recovery.

“It’s extremely sad and disturbing that motorists continue being a risk on the road, endangering not only their lives but the lives of others as well”, said Acting Chief Mokasi.
