According to Muntula, the aim of the day was to motivate the learners as they step into a very delicate time of their lives and also provide them with motivation on what to look forward to as they enter tertiary institutions.

“Children in our area somehow lack motivation due the living circumstances they face and having to see those around them engage in negative behaviour such substance and alcohol abuse.

“So we really wanted to keep them away from the streets on this specific day and just thank them for enduring throughout their years of education, especially given all the challenges they have faced along the way,” Mutula said.

He added that some of the learners come from underprivileged backgrounds but they did not let their circumstances define their future and for that they deserve a treat and this gesture of appreciation.

“We basically invited all former matric learners in the area, including those who did not perform well in their academics.

“We want to shower them with knowledge on other ways they can move from what seem to be failure at this point of their lives and make them understand that the biggest failure is sitting and feeling sorry for themselves rather than taking charge of their future.”

Ntsako Nobunga from Fidelitas Comprehensive and Megan Nxumalo from Glenbrack Junior Secondary School.

Mutu also said this is their first annual matric lunch and hope to hosts more of such events in the future.

“We want them to reach for the skies and to climb mountains to their success, because as young as they are the most important thing for them is to have their aspirations and dreams come true and that for us is important.”

The learners were also motivated to apply in Tvet colleges, register to write their supplementary exams as well as to upgrade their grades.

One of the motivational speakers for the day who is also a student at the University of the Witwatersrand, Bafana Sindimane expressed gratitude for Mutula for this initiative and encouraged him to do more for learners in the community.

“I wish them well in their future. It is always great to see young people in our area achieve because their achievements are also ours as a community and we are proud ourselves thereof,” Sindimane said.

Some of the learners were proud to announce that they have been accepted in tertiary institutions and are excited to start working towards their future careers.

“This is a great gesture and it’s overwhelming that there are people in our community who acknowledge the hard work we put into our studies. For us to reach our final year of study as matric learners there have been trials and tribulations but through it all we have made it. This shows that the birth of success comes from hard work, sweat and tears,” one of the learners, Megan Nxumalo said.
