Second chance to given to local matriculants

Failing matric or getting poor results can be devastating to a learner's academic endeavours, but the SCMSP is here to ensure that they get themselves up and try again.

Last week Wednesday, MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane invited all learners who did not meet the National Senior Certificate requirements to register for the Second Chance Matric Support Programme (SCMSP) at JC district office in Pimville, Zone 7.

The purpose of the event was to encourage and motivate the learners not to lose hope because they did not attain marks that could have taken them to universities.

“We are calling on all the matriculates who did not do well on their results, those who did make it as well as those who want to improve their results, from 2008-2022.

“They should come register at our district centres in Soweto and have the opportunity to write in June or November 2023,” MEC Chiloane urged all learners.

Failing matric or getting poor results can be devastating to a learner’s academic endeavours, but the SCMSP is here to ensure that they get themselves up and try again.

Mduduzi Mthobi from Pimville is one of the learners that were part of the SCMSP who shared his experience.

“When I did not pass my matric, this programme provided some form of upliftment for me to achieve my goals and dreams and encouraged me to work hard,” said Mthobi.

“My first attempt was in 2018 and I came back again in 2022 and actually made it. Anything is possible, put God and your family first. Work hard and never give up,” Mthobi continued.

The programme was formally introduced in 2016, it enables matriculates who would like to redo their matric because they had either failed or attained poor results and would like to improve them.

Although the programme has no age restrictions, the most targeted groups are those aged 21 and above, with a minimum qualification of Grade 9, 10 and 11 as well as those who are in ABET level 4.

“Registrations are open and for June they close on February 8 and the November ones close on March 15. We have set out psychosocial support for the learners who will be struggling,” MEC Chiloane concluded.
