The youngster who is currently a student at the University of Witwatersrand has been motivated to start her project after noticing the lack of sanitary towels provided to girls on the community of Eldos.

As part of her project, a sanitary towel drive was hosted this past weekend where young girls from the community were given sanitary pads collected by Patience and her team.

Lack of sanitary towels and other feminine hygiene products remains a major challenge facing young girls who end up missing school or resorting to the use of unhygienic means.

Patience said the use of things such as toilet paper is not an adequate means of approaching ones periods and can cause medical issues.

To prevent such, Patience has teamed up with Lucinda Borman, another Miss Gauteng Exclusive pageant finalist on this drive to end period poverty and empower girls in the community.

“The campaign this past weekend addressed issues such as female hygiene and educating younger girls about how they should address the shocking experience of having their period for the very first time,” explained Patience.

“There were also motivational talks which touched on the emotional, physical and mental wellbeing of young girls and all women.”

The drive was not only focused on addressing the issue of period poverty amongst young girls but it also provided comfort and consolation to those who are in abusive relationships.

Patience strongly believes that issues of women abuse, feminine hygiene and period poverty should all be given the same attention and be addressed accordingly as they affect the young and old.

“Women are the pillars of our homes and the anchors that uphold the family structure. Many women today from all ages are faced with factors that diminish their worth and value.

“It’s time that we stand up against these factors and provide a solution to our home pillars,” said Patience.
