However, in Pimville crime seems to be escalating at an alarming rate day by day.

Community leaders as well as the councillor held a meeting to discuss the safety of their community on January 06.

Cllr Sebenzile Mabuza of ward 22 Pimville

The purpose of the meeting was to address the lack of resources that the Community Policing Forum (CPF) is operating under.

Most significantly, the meeting was about developing new strategies to fight against the outbreak of crime as a united community.

General secretary of the Pimville CPF, Muzi Mangxoli said, “We know we are not going to reach a zero percent crime rate but we can’t allow criminals to do as they please as if we are none existence.

“Our visibility as the CPF and community leaders must ensure that our community is safe.”

The safety of residents is about feeling safe, whether at home, in the street or at work. It relates to quality of life and being able to pursue and obtain the fullest benefits from your domestic, social and economic lives without fear or hindrance from crime.

According to Cllr Sebenzile Mabuza these criminals are now advancing from stealing to killing young people every week.

The people are angry and have become a nation that harbour hate on each other.

“It’s time we stand up as a community and stop thinking that if it hasn’t happened to your child, it’s still a battle of others. Safety is of paramount importance to everyone and every child is your own,” Mabuza said.

Crime statistics show that approximately 7 004 people were killed by other persons in South Africa. This is an increase of 841 more people murdered, compared to the same period in 2021.

In order to eliminate the high rate of people being murdered in Pimville, Mangxoli urges the community to unite against these crimes.

“If we all come together to fight this common cause then the high rate of crime will drop drastically,” he said.

Mangxoli concluded by saying, “Safety should not solely depend on the SAPS and the patrollers.

“Every responsible citizen has a duty to act against every crime activity they witness in order to create a safe environment for all.”
