Communication officer for the police station Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said they have noted an increase in fraud cases reported in its policing precinct.

Tsotsotso said numerous fraud cases were opened concerning a roller shutter door company.

“In the past two weeks four fraud dockets were opened,” said Tsotsotso.

“After further investigation, it was determined that the company is not registered.”

Tsotsotso advised the community to always verify the authenticity of a company before transferring funds to its account.

She said one way to do this is to scrutinise details of the company, such as its email account.

“In most instances, a company would not use a Gmail account.”

Keeping with the theme of vigilance, Tsotsotso told motorists not to leave valuables in their vehicles.

She shared this information with the community in the hope of preventing theft out of motor vehicle-related crimes.

“Suspects will see the valuables on the seats and break into the vehicles at shopping centres or while motorists stop at traffic lights.”

Tsotsotso said unless community members have no alternative, they should leave their valuables in their boots.

Similarly, Tsotsotso advised community members and shoppers against withdrawing and transporting large sums of money.

Tsotsotso said by not withdrawing large sums of money from the ATMs they reduce the chances of falling victim to following-home robberies.

“If you feel you are being followed, remain vigilant, change your route and if you feel unsafe then drive to your nearest police station for assistance.”

Tsotsotso also urged motorists not to use their cellphones while driving. Instead, she advised road users to contact the person at another time.

“If you get a phone call while driving, do not pull over, instead tell the person you will call them back.”

Tsotsotso also encouraged community members travelling to ask a neighbour or a family member to remove the post from their mailbox and to periodically check on their property.
