Floods have claimed a lot of lives this year as they began in KZN and on this festive season have approached and destroyed some homes in Soweto.

The Kliptown bridge covered in floods

According to an individual who was stuck in the floods in a car from 4:00am in the morning, he felt his car floating and had already lost control of it when it began to sink in the river. The vehicle had four teenagers and two adults.

“We were coming from my friend’s daughter matric farewell around 4:00am when we reached the middle of the bridge and lost control of the car. So it was on me to try and save the four teenagers from drowning,” said Lenique Swartz one of the individuals who were in the car.

The residents said the floods have taken some of their belongings and they claim that they have been urging the government to develop their place.

“It was 2017/18 when I asked our former councillor Pamela Sibanyoni about her intentions for this bridge. Why is this bridge not rebuilt like the ones in Dube but she did not answer me.

Now seeing that this road is covered in floods and a lot of people will lose their homes makes me realise that our leaders are waiting for someone to die before they can rebuild this Kliptown bridge,” said Daubrey Tshabalala, a resident from Dlamini.

After the floods washed away the belongings of the residents of Kliptown Chicken Farm, Kasi Hero Foundation visited the affected homes to give out 16 food parcels on Sunday, 11 December.
