Jerry Skhosana, a football icon from Thembisa, was given his lost original world cup jersey from 1998 by Kenny Mametsa, along with the Premier of Gauteng Panyanza Lesufi, and radio presenter and DJ Tbose.

They also expressed their gratitude for his contributions to the community.

The legend was honoured on the Robert Marawa show on November 23.

Several players that participated in the competition signed it.

He continued by relating his experiences from the 1998 World Cup.

As a representative of his nation at the world cup, Skhosana considered this experience to be something he would never forget.

Benni McCarthy received praise from him as well for scoring Bafana Bafana’s opening goal of the competition.

Because it was also his birthday on the day of the match at the time, the entire jersey handover was extremely special to him.

“In 1998, I was a member of the French-based players.

“Benni may have scored the opening goal, but the finest part was having my birthday party live in France.

“I will always treasure that memory.

“Honestly, I appreciate them for their work and it means a lot to me. I was startled because I went to the show believing that I was going for an interview.

“I couldn’t tell by anything that these kind people were arranging a beautiful surprise for me that has so many sentiments,” said Skhosana.

According to Kenny Mametsa, the event was arranged to honour the soccer legend with flowers while he was still alive and to express the support of the community for his contributions.

“It was incredible to watch him get the jersey back because the occasion had special meaning for him.

“It was quite emotional, given that the original jersey is 24 years old (1998 World Cup). While he still can smell it, we offered him roses. He is the only Tembisan to have ever participated in the World Cup,” said Mametsa.
