It was also about the people who decided to do something when everyone else minded their own business.

GBV is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. However, this serves women and children only, because men are always ruled as perpetrators.

Everybody in South Africa is subject to abuse, including men.

“Women are actually the main perpetrators of emotional abuse, psychological abuse and financial abuse.

“Because there are no scars, we assume men are not victims as well,” said Ayanda Kunene chairperson of Xhumana Sibambane.

Bongani Ndlovu, Men in Prayer organisation Head of Projects said, “Violence is a learned behaviour where our parents sent us from a very young age to fight back to our peers whenever we came back home crying from the streets.

“An eye for an eye leaves the world blind. In the case of our community, GBV has left homes with grief, regret, hatred and it has turned children into orphans and left others living in fear of what’s next.”
