Tee Dee Warriors Football Club was founded in 2019 by Desmond Ntsumela to take children off the streets, from drugs and other substances use which have dominated the township in recent years.

“It was truly inspired by the scenes I saw every day in my community. Young people who had potential turned into drugs, some dropped out of school.

“I said to myself if I can save a few boys, I would have done my duty because you can’t save them all,” he recalls.

The club over the years has grown to six divisions, starting with juniors in the u/11 until the u/23, accommodating more than 60 aspiring players.

“It has been hard because not every family is able to meet those requirements due to financial challenges and the high unemployment rate in our township.

“That often means we have to go dig deep in our own pockets to cover costs and get them to games.

“There are also extra costs and logistics when we get to those tournaments that also require money.

“We want to make sure that no child feels out of place or like he doesn’t belong because that can break their self-esteem.

“So sponsorship closes that door and boosts their confidence so they can focus on the game.”

He also said they wanted to invest in the boy’s education as the sport was not always a guarantee.

“We always emphasise education to them because we know not everyone is going to be a professional player.

“We all know soccer is a short term career so a sponsor will allow us to be able to identify and direct resources to those who may or may not be academically strong and improve their marks.”

The club which has been mainly playing in local tournaments in Soweto, shared big plans for the future, citing that should the club secure a sponsorship, they hoped to join the Local Football Association (LFA) in Dobsonville in the New Year.

“That will see us playing in the fourth division and up against big dawgs in the local arena and also give our youngsters a chance to display their raw talent and skills on a bigger platform,” an elated Ntsumela told Urban News.

“It is also our dream to cater to both genders by establishing other sporting disciplines like netball and soccer teams for girls and we are unfortunately unable to fulfil that without a sponsor.”
