This is a new norm which was adopted by the dojo last year to recognise and motivate the karatekas who are working hard each month.

Sensei Thabo Molubi of the Kofukan Gauteng Karate Academy said this initiative has brought change in the dojo and it keeps the karatekas on their toes each month as they all want to be recognised as karatekas of the month.

“We have a male trophy that is contested by male karatekas and a female trophy that is contested by female karatekas as well.

“This brings balance to the whole concept as one gender group might be stronger than the other.

“To my surprise the female gender has proven to be stronger than the males and I am super impressed by that,” sensei Molubi said.

He added that it is impressive to see girls taking a leadership role and leading from the front in karate.

“We have all seen the statistics of GBV is increasing every day in our country, we therefore encourage females to take up karate as a sport to learn how to defend themselves.”

Stanley Chimera who started karate in the beginning of the year impressed sensei Molubi as he rose to the occasion and proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he scooped his first tournament gold medals for kata and kumite.

“These are outstanding results for a first year athlete. We also have Karabelo Maduna who has shown to have real passion for this sport and was awarded the karateka title of the month for October.”

Maduna’s results are said to be impressive and together with her team they won a gold medal in the kata team’s event that was recently held at the Johannesburg Regional Development Trails.
