Locals invited to upcoming Orlando Summer Festivities

The day will consist of multi activities, including choral music, netball and soccer.

Orlando Summer Festivities is inviting residents and local teams to be part of their 3rd annual games which will be taking place at Orlando Number Two Grounds from December 16.

According to Mandla Tshabalala, event project manager the event will be a combination of multi activities aimed at keeping youngsters off the streets while engaging them in one thing they love which is sports.

Local choirs from Soweto and the surrounding area are called to be part of the choir festival and will be given an opportunity to render three songs including, one chosen by the judges, another advocating against GBV and one of their choice.

When it comes to sports, at least 16 senior teams will be given an opportunity to go heads-on in the netball court and 32 local soccer teams which will be divided in seniors and under 17’s.

“We want to make it a point that we engage with everyone from the community because we know that during the festive season there is a hive of activities in the area, so our goal is to keep locals busy while doing what they love,” said Tshabalala.

He added that as the years goes they aim to add more extra mural activities to their festivities.

“We want to have our own Macufe Festival nearby because we know that Soweto is the home of many talents. We want people to know that Soweto is a great place to be during festive seasons.”

Various organisations and local businesses have come of board to support the initiative including, Black Cherry, Kena Foundation, Khabalu’daka and Mainfirm Investments.

One of the founders of the event, Thulani Madlala urged teams to avail themselves and be part of the event.

“We take pride in showcasing talent in the area as people born and raised in Soweto.

“We are certain that new talent will be discovered through this initiative and that there will be more from where this came from,” Madlala said.
