Charges against Ekurhuleni councilllor are under investigation

“The councillor was charged, not convicted and as such, he will continue to perform his duties.“

Ward 92 councillor Kade Guerreiro made his first appearance in Edenvale Magistrate’s Court for charges recently brought against him.

On October 20 Guerreiro faced charges of malicious damage to property and common assault in court.
The court case was postponed to November 28.

Bedfordview SAPS corporate communication officer Sergeant Lillian Modiga said Guerreiro was arrested on October 19 at Bedfordview SAPS.

She said on September 23 Guerreiro allegedly forcibly entered an elderly woman’s place of residence at Kruinhof Retirement Village and assaulted her.

“The matter was reported to the police after the complainant was arrested for assaulting the councillor,” said Modiga.

“The councillor was arrested and detained at Bedfordview SAPS after he was called to see the investigating officer.”

She said the investigation into the matter continues.

Commenting on behalf of Guerreiro, Ekurhuleni DA chief whip Khetha Shandu said the party was aware of the matter.

“The matter and circumstances of what transpired are sub-judice and the rule of law must be allowed to take its course.

“It would be imprudent to disclose information that would jeopardise the case.”

Shandu said the DA expects councillors to carry out their duties and at all times to conduct themselves in line with the law.

He said councillors are provided with resources to deal with stress, pressure and situations of a sensitive nature.

Commenting on whether this will affect residents and businesses in Ward 92 Shandu, said service delivery will continue.

“The councillor was charged, not convicted and as such, he will continue to perform his duties, “said Shandu.

Similarly, spokesperson for the office of the speaker, Lulama Mankabane, said the sffice of the speaker was aware of the arrest and is following the matter closely but stated that the matter is sub-judice.

“We have full confidence in our justice system and we should allow the rule of law to take its course,” said Mankabane.

She highlighted that Guerreiro will continue to perform his duties in the interim as he was charged and not convicted.
