Part of Fedelitas’ Comprehensive High School goes up in flames

“The fire and rescue teams were dispatched immediately and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby classrooms and no injuries were reported.”

A section of classrooms at the Fedelitas Comprehensive High School in Zone 5 went up in flames on Monday morning of September 26.

The fire incident had scores of parents and community members flooding the school premises attempting to gain entry however security personnel refused citing only the fire brigade would be let in.

According to eye witnesses, who were the first on scene, the fire started between 9 and 10 am on the upper top floor of the building near the admin block.

Speaking to Urban News, Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona said the department is aware of the fire incident and investigations are currently underway. The cause of the fire is at this point unknown.

“We can confirm that a blaze broke out in an unused classroom on Monday, September 26. The cause of the fire is still unknown but preliminary investigations reveal that the flame damaged the said classroom and furniture,” Mabona told the publication.

“The fire and rescue teams were dispatched immediately and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby classrooms and no injuries were reported.”

The spokesperson added that the education department had visited the school to provide the necessary support to ensure that teaching and learning is continuing.

The matter has been reported to the police and investigations are currently underway.
