Local businessman leads career expo

"We felt that it was important that we host the career day for our Grade 9 who will be choosing subjects for FET phase."

STEM careers and fields of study are said to be the future of solving the country’s ailing economy and unemployment challenges.

This was a message from a Diepkloof businessman, Joe Masekwameng who delivered the key note address to learners at Madibane Comprehensive School during a Career Expo and exhibition at the institution on September 29.

The event sponsored by Masekwmeng’s engineering and construction company, Are Shomeng has continued its partnership with the institution to expose high schoolers to a variety of career and study streams.

“This is the one thing we have been doing for a couple of years, helping our high school learners in preparation for their tertiary journey.

“It’s been years now and there are a lot of careers that we are driving but mostly in the Math and Science,” said Masekwameng.

Masekwameng who grew up down the road from the institution also oversees WizeUp programme to offer free tutoring lessons to the institution on weekends focusing on Math and Science.

“I personally have experienced the same challenges, and we know how difficult it can be to be under resourced and disadvantaged.

“So with our position, we want to advantage of that, and make sure that these kids achieve equivalent to those from middle and privilege communities.

“It is imperative that we resource the very same community so they can support generations to come.”

The expo day also included surrounding high schools such as Namedi Secondary School, Bopasenatla Secondary, Diepdale and Fedelitas High.

Dzivhu Makuya, Departmental Head for Languages and Life Orientation at the school expressed gratitude for continued support by the businessman and cited that the event was great investment in the youth.

“The event today is to drive a change in perspective for our learners.

“We felt that it was important that we host the career day for our Grade 9 who will be choosing subjects for FET phase.

“We wanted them to interact with different institutions and sectors and be orientated by individuals who are knowledgeable but the grade 12 learners will also get a chance to discuss career paths, university applications and bursaries for those who will be furthering their studies next year,” he explained.
