‘She fears’ auditions wrap up in Diepkloof

The Diepkloof based theatre production house, Bayede Productions, established in 2020 this week held auditions in Diepkloof Hall.

Legendary Sarafina thespians from Soweto have come together to unearth new talent for a new play set to premier in November.

The Diepkloof based theatre production house, Bayede Productions, established in 2020 this week held auditions in Diepkloof Hall from 19-23 September for 15 budding actors and actresses who will star in the play.

The purpose of the play is to redress social challenges by using theatre and storytelling as a way to combat the social scourge.

Founding member of Bayede Productions, writer and director of the play, Pat Mlaba, explains further by sharing the version of the story line.

“The project addresses some of the challenges which we are seeing facing our youth in schools and their homes but it further explores a sharp focus on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), misogyny and patriarchy.

“These issues are affecting everyone, so how do we start discussing these issues and making sure we have tangible solutions?”

The audition process began three months back, at the Zodwa Khoza Foundation centre but took a break and resumed three weeks ago.

‘She Fears’ is about Ntozo, a teenage school girl from a middleclass family, who lost her father to Hiv/Aids and raised by a single parent. Ntozo’s world gets entangled when her mother falls in love and marries her step father, Gubha who fled from Transkei to the city, running away from his crimes.

The production will include other Sarafina greats such as Dickson Malele, stage manager from Woza Albert, director and choreographer Brian Mazibuko , Eddie Mathibe who was also a musical director for Mbongeni Ngema.

Brian Mazibuko, lead choreographer for the play shared his excitement citing this was a great opportunity to expose to young people.

The play will showcase first with a local tour in high schools around the area, various community halls around Soweto before taking to theatres in the province and across the country.

“We are trying to bring theatre to the people but we are hoping that once we gain momentum, relevant sponsors including the arts, culture and recreation can come on board into the development of such talents.”
