Two arrested for Nomzamo tavern murders

It is alleged, a further four men were also linked to the incident, bringing the total number of suspects involved in the shooting to nine.

Gauteng Police have made a major breakthrough in the fatal mass shooting incident which occurred at the Nomzamo Park, Orlando East in July.

The police confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to the shooting incident where one of the suspects was apprehended on the N3 highway making way into Gauteng, and another in the Northern Cape between September 22 and 23.

“The National Crime Intelligence officers arrested one suspect who was then linked to the Nomzamo shooting incident in Johannesburg.

“The suspect was handed over to Gauteng’s Murder and Robbery Investigating Team for further handling. He then led the team to one of his accomplices who was arrested in Northern Cape,” the statement from the SAPS read.

One of the suspects arrested is a 23 year-old male. Earlier in the month, Police in the province released the identities of the five men believed to be behind the shooting at the tavern.

It is alleged, a further four men were also linked to the incident, bringing the total number of suspects involved in the shooting to nine.

In a separate incident, members of the Crime Intelligence Unit also arrested two more suspects linked to an incident that occurred in Kliptown in October 2021 where a Lesotho musician was killed.

The said suspect is also linked to another murder and attempted murder case that occurred in Orlando in May 2022 while the fourth suspect was apprehended on a warrant of arrest for a double murder incident that occurred in Doornkop.

The Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the team and National Crime Intelligence for the breakthrough on the case.

Investigations are continuing and more arrests are expected.

The suspects will be appearing at the Orlando Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 26 September 2022.
