Patrollers dispatched to tackle crime in Diepkloof

"We don’t want to see passages exposed with no patrollers, even drug users we don’t want them doing as they please in our homes."

The African National Congress (ANC) Leadership in Ward 26 on Friday launched its latest crime preventative neighbourhood patrollers to some of its Diepkloof residents who came out at Extreme Park.

The launch ‘Buya Mthetho’ by the political party is a response to curb the high crime rate and address the on- going safety concerns across the different zones which fall under the ward.

“We are worried about the crime in the ward. It is unfortunately too high and everyday there is something new happening.

“What we are seeing has been long here but our job now is to help our community and knock on the doors of companies operating here.

“Enough is enough, we are tired of the crime,” said ANC Chairperson Kamohelo Bojabotseha who addressed the residents.

“We want to see patrollers on each and every corner.

“We don’t want to see passages exposed with no patrollers, even drug users we don’t want them doing as they please in our homes.

“Thank you to the community patrollers because we know it’s not a paying job but a service to the community.”

Chairperson of Community Police Forum (CPF) Zinzile Tshabalala, applauded the launch.

“I thank the community of Diepkloof because with the database we currently have at the police station, in all the four wards we have 485 patrollers and a further 50 still awaiting induction.

“I’m proud to say in the number almost half is from ward 26 in the database of the MEC,” she explained.

Tshabala who has been working in the CPF for over 20 years shared that it was about time that residents took community patrolling serious.

“I feel happy that residents have seen that this is necessary for the community because we are aware that while we have the police, they don’t service us as we may need so it is truly our time to stand up for ourselves.

“In Diepkloof patrollers are here and will be visible and we will continue to minimise crime as patrollers. We hear many successes from patrollers,” she concluded.

Moipone Molusi from phase 3 said, “While I am happy about the launch here today, I would like them to work closely with the police and not take matters into their own hands. They must not operate on hearsay but investigate.

“And they must stop targeting families just because that house is known for having a troublesome child. That’s wrong.”

Another resident, a mother to a known criminal, who wished to remain anonymous due to safety concerns said she hoped that the CPF and police would start with dealing harshly with drug deans which she suggests were the reason behind the high crime levels.
