The programme was launched on August 15 to introduce learners to ecology education for sustainable development.

“This programme aims to meet the needs of The African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) as a mechanism for enhancing the quality of education and expanding on learning initiatives within the broader African region,” said Doyle.

Doyle also stated that the Department of Education does not only feed an educational framework that is top down but teachers and organisations will frame the future of education from the bottom up through this programme.

According to Doyle, the current environmental care programme was written by Dr. Otieno. The Faith-Based Education for Sustainable Development, a toolkit produced by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) and the Kenya Organisation of Environmental Education (KOEE).

This eco-school programme is set to roll out in a network of schools within Soweto before going to a national level.

Doyle added, “His Choice Ministries will ensure that we follow all processes to ensure that adaptation is done with help from the Department of Education, City Parks and Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) to bring sustainable development education and agricultural science back as a subject within public schools.

“Action learning will ensure kids have the knowledge to face the current loss and damage on the African continent.”

On September 6, the NPC along with learners at Cavendish Primary had the opportunity to plant their first two trees which were pomegranate and lemon tree.

They also have a mix of rocket, chillies, sunflowers, onions, tomatoes, beans and maize.

“When this project first started, the general assistant staff wanted to do something special for the kids. Andy Everts, Frank Baitjies, Deon Tack and Ashley Clark saw a need for leaners to work in the garden.

“This then sparked an interest on Mr Kurtis Holland, the Life Orientation teacher who saw that this was something that could contribute directly into the school curriculum,” he explained.
