Sam Sam defends his Shay’iMoto title

The competition finale drew huge crowds who witnessed car spinners from across the country battle it out for the ultimate prize and bragging rights.

Samkeliso Sam Sam Thubane was crowned the 2022 Red Bull Shay’iMoto champion this past weekend at Wheelz n Smoke.

The competition finale drew huge crowds who witnessed car spinners from across the country battle it out for the ultimate prize and bragging rights.

The qualifying event took place on Friday and the grand finale where spinners showcased their skills behind the wheel was held on Saturday night.

In the final round, Sam Sam was up against Austin Kruger and in what appeared to be a flawless victory, the crowd and the judges all agreed that Sam Sam was the champ.

From the quarter-finals Sam Sam and his stuntman had new tricks for each round which made him a crowd favourite and secured him a spot in the finals.

The crowd got to witness some daring car control skills and stunts from the competitors in a way they had never seen before.

Sam Sam put on quit a show when he pulled out a guitar and started playing a tune while his Gusheshe was spinning. The crowd went crazy and made it clear that Thubane had defended his title.

He is the first spinner to win the competition twice since its inception.

“I am very happy to be the first driver to win the title back to back. Earlier in the day, I wasn’t feeling well, but I think the smell of burning tyres is my medication because once I got into the car I felt like myself.

“I still can’t believe I managed to win, but I kept going and did my best,” said Sam Sam after being crowned champion.

For the first time in two years, the event welcomed back a live audience after being hosted behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The programme was directed by Vic Pardal and Anele Zondo who injected their high energies into the festivities and kept the crowd entertained throughout the night.

After the smoke had settled, Kabelo Mabalane took to the stage for a special performance that kept the party going through to the night.

“Being at Red Bull Shay’iMoto was a high-touch experience for me. I’ve been to a number of Red Bull experiences and this definitely met my expectations.

I have a newfound respect for all the drivers that showcased the skills on the tar – it’s really great that Red Bull gives this kind of athleticism an opportunity to shine,” said Bouga Luv.
