Rebranding Soweto with kasi dialogue

The NPO which is fast becoming a lobby, and advocacy group, sought to tackle issues of unemployment, township economy and issues of service delivery.

Local civic organisations, Faith Based, business community and residents of Soweto gathered at the Diepkloof hall to discuss all things Soweto at the first 1Soweto seminar under the banner ‘Together building a better Soweto.’

The purpose of the seminar was to find a common purpose and rebrand Soweto, the iconic township its former glory.

Thabo Nkhasi, Chairperson of 1Soweto said they were concerned about the pressing issues facing Soweto residents and hopes that through the seminar they would stir the conversation and carve out a clear path for the township.

“After growing calls from various stakeholders, there was a call that said Soweto is not the township that we used to know anymore. We need to fix Soweto because it is fragmented and has lost its values and moral fibre.

“The dialogue will engage and find a common goal of how do we resuscitate our township to its glory,” Nkhasi told Urban News.

The NPO which is fast becoming a lobby, and advocacy group, sought to tackle issues of unemployment, township economy and issues of service delivery.

“Our intended outcome is to unite Soweto in its cultural diversity and to have a Soweto that speaks in one voice and becoming the champions of their communities,” he further added.

The leader said they wanted Soweto unplugged from the City of Johannesburg in the upcoming elections in 2024 citing that the township is in shambles because of people prioritizing their own agendas and not the people’s needs.

“We are saying Soweto must become its own municipality so that we are able to manage our affairs at this level. This will ensure that we hold ourselves accountable and that our challenges are attended to swiftly because these are our lived realities.”

Sipho Mazomba, Founder of NKA Non-Profit Organisation, said he attended the event because he was among the active residents who are driven to empower the community and driving forth ideas and solutions to address some of the challenges in the township.

“I believe a lot of us have solutions, however resources limit us. So we are saying we need to be working together to make this vision work.

“Not only us who run organisations, but ordinary residents of our township are needed to add their voices in reviving our township.

“This can’t be the Soweto that our grandchildren will inherit nor can we stand aside and watch it go up in flames,” he said, adding that the event was a great networking session that brought like-minded individuals under one roof.
