The initiative is to give disadvantaged young women an opportunity to get qualifications.

The director and business owner of the spa, Shayne Nel shared that the spa has been running for the last three years and they are offering the studies to any disadvantaged young female who is interested in the opportunity.

“School drop outs for whatever the reason, they don’t have to have matric but at least grade 9 and they just have to know basic reading and writing,” she said.

The programme offers an on the job training which teaches beneficiaries the skills needed in the industry.

There is a theory side and practicals in every module and once those are successfully completed beneficiaries receive certificates allowing them to become self-sustainable or be employed.

“We do assessments to monitor progress before they sit for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) SETA accredited exam at an accredited Beauty Therapy College.

“Some find it hard because it’s not easy. We have been doing it for two years. We roll out every four months for applications,” explained Nel.

One of the girls is ready to sit for her holistic massage and skincare exam while others are still studying other modules.

Nel explained that they take it easy with the studies and therefore they do two modules at a time at the beneficiary’s pace.

“We give them an opportunity with us as a business if possible. We assist with guidance to set them up should they have a space at home to start their own businesses and we try and get them out there in the industry,” added Nel.

When asked what the motivation behind the programme was, she explained that she saw too many girls falling pregnant, many due to home circumstances.

Some were failed by the education system so they dropped out of school and now they cannot find any form of employment.

There are so many other contributing factors, the list is endless and that is what made her decide to start the programme.

There are no costs to doing the programme as the spa covers all costs for beneficiaries. The programme is opened every fourth months where possible beneficiaries go through a screening interview just to check substance history if they are clean and for how long.
