An anti-bullying campaign by ACED centre

ACED in Kliptown hosted an anti-bullying and drug abuse campaign to make children aware of the consequences of bullying and using substances.

The Academic Citizenship Economic Development (ACED) centre in Kliptown held a campaign to educate learners about the dangers of substance abuse and bullying last week.

The event accommodated about 500 children from the community.

ACED is a multipurpose community development centre that offers services mainly to the youth of Eldorado Park, Soweto, Lenasia, and other surrounding communities.

Centre manager, Clint Langson explained that the campaign focused on educating the children about bullying, peer pressure and substance abuse through a puppet show.

Children who were sitting down for the Savy Money session where they learnt about saving money.

There were also talks delivered by representatives of various stakeholders that were invited.

Not only did the children learn about bullying but they also had a session where they taught about saving money by Money Savvy Kids.

The financial literacy business was educating children on how to take a R1 and turn it into a two-rand R2.

PUSH, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, the local clinic, Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) were some of the stakeholders who were part of the campaign.

The ACED centre provided career guidance and counselling as well as contact information for the learners to take down. Later, the Department of Social Services provided diversion services for the children.

This was in response to an increase in the number of children being involved in violent criminal activities resulting in them being in conflict with the law in Eldorado Park and Soweto.
