Diepkloof soccer tournament concludes in style

Excitement filled the air as 16 teams from Diepkloof, Orlando and Motswaledi participated in the Siyanamukela Creative Centre Winter Games 2022.

Excitement filled the air as 16 teams from Diepkloof, Orlando and Motswaledi participated in the Siyanamukela Creative Centre Winter Games 2022 that were held over two weeks at the Santa Soccer Fields in Zone 6.

The friendly tournament hosted the under 11s and under 13s in top 8 tournament and a heated under 15s top four.

Dominating across the under 13 and 15 age groups, Juventus FC kept the crowd intrigued and cheering from the sidelines.

Supporters also witnessed a blowing under 11s final that saw Dlamini FC walk away with a 2-1 victory against Junior Aces at the end of the second half.

In the under 13 finals, Juventus won 4-2 on penalties against Dlamini FC after both teams drew 2-2 at the 90th minute.

The biggest showdown of the tournament that kept spectators on their feet was the deadly final between the under 15 favourites, Juventus FC up aganst Shining Stars FC.

Juventus came up top again with a 3-1 victory claiming the winter 2022 tournament.

Coach and tournament organiser, Monde ‘Ace’ Mtenjana said the initiative was to change focus and care for the young boys who are often forgotten.

“All this is to keep our children busy and away from the streets. I cannot stress the importance of mentoring and training them while they are still young. We are seeing too much attention on adult tournaments and far less on the kids,” he said.

Mtenjana praised the excellent display of talent adding that the tournament was the epitome of what sportsmanship looks like.

“The enthusiasm and commitment from all teams and coaches was one of the best I’ve seen.

“The discipline, team spirit, fair play and caring for one another was the order of the day and that’s what the sport is all about, true sportsmanship,” he concluded.

The local coach who also forms part of the Siyanamukela Creative Center which hosted the event added that a second tournament will be held in September during the school break.
