Cable thieves face 15 years in prison

According to the police report, the crime was reported on July 2020, by Metro Police Officers who were on duty along the Soweto Highway when they spotted three males pulling a Black Cable along Immink Drive.

The SAPS in Diepkloof have successfully led to the conviction of two suspects aged between 24 and 49 years old who were found guilty of cable theft.

The pair has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm for life after a nearly two year trial.

According to the police report, the crime was reported on July 2020, by Metro Police Officers who were on duty along the Soweto Highway when they spotted three males pulling a Black Cable along Immink Drive.

“One suspect was busy using an Axe to cut the Cable whilst the two were pulling it.

“Officers immediately put on the blue lights and siren the three suspects started running towards the open space.

“The officers gave chase and arrested two suspects, while the one suspect disappeared into the fields,” the statement read.

The officers detained the two suspects and a case of cable theft was opened. Police further booked in evidence which included a 60meters long cable, Axe and a knife.

Police investigation revealed that the Cable belonged to City Power and was positively identified by the power utility as ABC Cable for electricity.

Sgt Ndaba from Diepkloof Saps Detective was assigned to investigate the case, and it was put on the court roll from 2020 JULY until date of trial 2022-05-20.
