Suspect nabbed for hijacking a taxi in Meadowlands

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit arrested a 50-year-old male for attempted murder, kidnapping, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and a hijacked vehicle in Meadowlands this past weekend.

While on their crime prevention patrol in the area, JMPD officers received a lookout alert for a Toyota Quantum which had been reportedly hijacked in Langlaagte. It was also reported that the driver of the Quantum had been kidnapped during the hijacking.

“Officers spotted the hijacked vehicle travelling along Odendaal Street in Meadowlands.

“They attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspects sped off and a high speed chase ensued,” explained JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla.

“Suspects started shooting at the officers as they continued to give chase. Whilst attempting to evade the police, the suspects crashed into other vehicles until they were cornered at Hlungwane Street.”

One suspect was shot by the officers but managed to flee with his bullet wound. The driver was arrested and he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off and live ammunition.

Fihla continued, “When searching the vehicle, the hijacked victim was found tied in the Quantum and was rescued by the officers. The arrested suspect was detained at Meadowlands SAPS on multiple charges.

“He is due to appear in court during the course of the week. The hijacked vehicle was seized and booked in at the Lenasia SAPS pound for verification.”
