Police Minister, Bheki Cele together with the National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, Joburg Mayor, Mpho Phalatse and the MEC of community Safety, Faith Mazibuko visited Nomzamo on Monday following Sunday’s deadly mass shooting.

The incident left 15 people dead and nine in critical condition at hospital. Police suggest it may have been a random shooting.

During his address, the minister assured residents that the police ministry has deployed a dedicated team of investigators who will be overseeing the case, in what he promised would be a quick turnaround time to finding those responsible.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele met with residents of Nomzamo after more than 14 people were gunned down.

The Minister described the incident as a shocking brutality as he detailed some of the preliminary findings on the scene.

“Police investigators found 137 empty cartridges of AK4, which tells us that they repeatedly loaded the ammunition. It also tells us these people were here to make sure that no one came out alive. We also have now established that there were five men in the vehicle,” he said.

Cele further assured the community that they will deploy more police personnel on the ground to monitor the area.

“We have agreed that we will strengthen police visibility by increasing police who will be stationed in the community and will ensure that they are patrolling. From tonight, we will make sure that they are among you.

A total of 16 people died at this scene after a mowed down by unknown gunmen.

 

“The national commissioner has also committed to ensuring that the Orlando Police Station gets an intake of at least five sector vehicles,” he shared with the cheering crowd.

He also said the National Commissioner and the SAPS would embark on a door-to-door operation in the area in search of illegal guns.

High ranking police officials were also at the scene of the crime.

The minister’s address revealed that the Orlando policing prescient alone has over 239 taverns and 32 bottle stores.

Addressing this, the minister called on the mayor to create alternative outlets for young people in the area.
