Protea Glen family loses everything in fire

There were six people in the house and fortunately no one was injured.

The Khabanyane family in Protea Glen Extension 1 lost everything to a fire on Sunday July 3 at around 00:00 midnight.

Explaining what happened, Rethabile Khabanyane said at around 22:00 she went to bed, leaving the children including those who had visited behind at the dining room.

At around 00:00 she heard the children screaming, and when she opened her eyes she saw her house engulfed in flames.

The 30-year-old then called for help. After calling for help from the tenants, they tried to quench the fire but it was unfortunately too powerful and had started spreading towards the whole house.

It burned down a six room house which consisted of two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, lounge and a bathroom.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be a candle.

This is what is left, after the family’s homes was swallowed by raging flames.

 

“We managed to vacate the house in time,” said Khabanyane.

Khabanyane said she is looking forward to receiving help from the community.

“I would like to plead with the community to at least assist me where they can especially in rebuilding the house so we can have a home again,” she added.

Safety tips on how to avoid fire caused by candles:

· Keep candles at least one foot away from flammable objects, such as furniture, curtains, paper, plants, or electronics.

· Burn candles in sturdy candle holders and place them on horizontal, stable, and heat-resistant surfaces.

· Keep lit candles at least three inches apart to ensure that they don’t melt one another.
