EFF and Operation Dudula members clash at Nomzamo crime scene

Chaos ensued at the crime scene when the two groups accused each other of political grandstanding.

Police had to step in and calm the situation when tensions ran high between members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Soweto Parliament in Nomzamo on Sunday.

Members of the Soweto Parliament, led by Nhlanhla Lux were on the scene to offer their support to the community of Nomzamo following the death of 15 people at Mdlalose’s Tavern.

They called on residents and community leaders to not politicise the situation but instead should prioritise the needs of the bereaved families and the community.

The situation almost got out of hand and a scuffle broke out when members of the EFF arrived in their red party regalia.

This was seen by residents as a way of capitalising on the situation for political reasons by the EFF.

“We are not here as politicians but we are here as a community.

“No one should turn this into a political thing, politicians can come after and visit families to pay their respect and not to campaign here,” said Thabang Moloi, a community leader from Pimville.

They are pointing fingers at the EFF for encouraging undocumented foreigners to enter this country and setting up squatter camps which become dens for criminals.

This was seen by residents as a way of capitalising on the situation for political reasons by the EFF.

Keabetsoe Sticks Malebo expressed disappointment following the scuffle and reminded the people that they were there to offer support to residents of Nomzamo.

“We are not supposed to be doing all this because it makes us look bad as a black nation. If they are leaders like they are saying, they should act better than this. Why are they carrying screwdrivers and knobkerries?

“We are no here to fight and this is not a Nhlanhla Lux party.

“Nomzamo is in mourning and we should be praying and supporting the bereaved families but we are busy fighting because of people who think this is a political battle,” said Malebo.

Ward 30 councillor, Mohau Molefe also called for calm and warned leaders against politicising community issues.

“We are very much aggrieved by the situation here at Nomzamo but what is even more sad is people coming here not to assist but to grand stand and do all the wrong things that are not going to assist the situation,” said Molefe.

Police managed to calm the situation and separated the two groups with no injuries or arrests reported.
