Part of their family home was engulfed in fire last week after a heater in one of the bedrooms was left unattended by the children during the cold week.

According to family, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 15 when two siblings aged 17 and 19 and their aunt slept with a heater on.

They said they suspected that the pair of jeans may have caught fire.

A burnt door and Mattress rubble from the devastating fire are what remain for the Masondo Family.

“We went to bed whilst the heater was still on as we were trying to keep the house was warm for school morning.

“When I woke up to go to the bathroom I found my jean on the heater but there was no smoke.

“When I came back my sibling was screaming that there was a fire. I tried to pour water but it kept burning and the blaze started growing,” they said.

The siblings together with members of the community contained the fire before it could spread to other parts of the house and they all managed to escape unharmed.

The 59-year-old Mamsie Masondo, who works as a domestic worker was not home at the time of the incident, she usually leaves three days a week to be closer to work.

“I rushed home after receiving a call that there had been a fire,” she said.

“We lost everything that was in that room, two beds, a TV, clothes and all belongings. We are left with one bed that we share with the little ones. Some also sleep on the sofas.

My grandson has been sleeping elsewhere because we do not have enough blankets – everyone is scattered until we recover. It is cold at night as you can see that we are left with no roof in that bedroom.”

An emotional Masondo could not contain her tears, shared that the two grandchildren were left in her care after their parents died.

“I had no plan of what we were going to do.

“Today these kids will see an example that their mother did not die and left them alone but that she is alive in the form of other mothers like Patience.

“They now know where to go when they need help,” she concluded.
