Eldos’ Development Centre marks 2022 Youth Day

The centre is a place where young people can get assistance to upskill themselves.

On June 15, the Greater Eldorado Park Youth Skills Development Centre (GEPYSDC) celebrated Youth Day for the young people to remember the history of the 1976 uprising.

The centre is a place where young people can get assistance to upskill themselves.

Chairperson Phyllis Vilkazi said, “As the youth you need to take leadership and each one of you are very important people for the centre. Come up with ideas, come up things that is going to enhance the community.

“We have a broader platform here, we want to open it up to say that youth from this centre is the youth that is going to take the lead.”

The youth had an ice breaker to kick off the morning, they were given sweets. Based on the colour of the sweets, each person had to answer a question based on the colour of their sweets.

The questions were about the history of 1976 which was a learning curve for many as they revived their knowledge of Youth Day.

There were special guests who came out to speak to the youth about apartheid and the struggles that the youth faced in that era.

Zane Kaldine and James Lawrances spoke about the students of 1976 and what the course of their struggle was for.

The founder of the Youth Business Forum spoke to the youth about the business opportunities that are available for the youth and how important it is for them to have the necessary access to these opportunities.

Jamil August said, “We are in the struggle for economic freedom and the struggle continues. The government’s intention this time is to ensure that disadvantaged individuals are advantaged.”

Celebrations continued with poetry, music and dance by young people who are part of the GEPYSDC.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) was also there to uplift the youth with a dance item.

Beke le Beke came out to perform at the event which had everyone chanting for him. The event was a huge success and the youth was motivated and encouraged to be good members of their communities.
