Turning Soweto boys into honourable men

It was a fun filled event which included a talk panel by notable speakers such as Thabiso Mailula. Issues that affect a boy child, as he grows up to become a man were discussed.
There was poetry, dance and music in between.
Social Workers and Life Coaches were also present to help address issues that affect a boy child and referring them to different avenues of help or solutions.
“According to the 2017 Statistics SA General Household Survey, a shocking 61,8% of children under the age of 18 years live without a father and 10,1% of these children’s fathers are deceased, while 51,7% of the fathers are alive, but not living with the child.
It is because of these reasons we decided to have such an event,” said Zakes Ezekiya Manda, co-founder of Nyeleti Light House.
Manda continued to say that fatherlessness has a negative emotional effect on a boy child.

The absence of a father potentially has serious and long-term consequences with issues of abandonment.
“I decided to come and speak to the boys because we need to raise honest, responsible young men. Many of them don’t have the kind of role models that we teaching them to be,” said Mailula.
He continued to say that he wishes he had such events take place in his community when he was young in order to have more good male role models for today’s youth.
