The Youth Day vaccination event is part of the centre’s comprehensive vaccination campaign that began in March, designed to motivate the youth to take responsibility for their health.

Themed #GetaJabAndSaveaLife, the event will encourage young people to get vaccinated and link them with qualified experts to provide educational sessions about Covid-19 and vaccines in hopes of addressing vaccine hesitancy among young people.

“The youth of 16 June 1976, fought hard for the freedom that the youth of today is enjoying. The aim of this event is to encourage the youth of today to be modern-time heroes by getting vaccinated for covid-19 and getting their boosters to save lives,” said Centre Manager Mlungisi Mvelase.

The NPO has partnered with various stakeholders such as HIVSA that is funding the event, Ke Ready SA which provides fully equipped vaccination pop-up sites and give hampers to individuals that will get vaccinated.

“This event is not only for people that want to get vaccinated only, but is open to everyone. Those that are skeptical about getting vaccinated, by coming to the event, they will get the correct information from reliable sources about covid-19 and vaccines that might make them think otherwise,” Mvelase concluded.

Ricky Bopape, one of the organiser and arts coordinator at the centre said, “The event will be filled with lots of entertainment for the whole family. We have invited football and netball teams from local NPOs and teams from the community of Diepkloof to participate in mini-tournaments that will be held concurrently to entertain attendees on the day.”

Bopape further added that the organisation has prepared an inclusive programme which will also feature dance, music and poetry as well an array of local performers.

Ward 26 councillor, Sithembiso Mashinini and Zweli Mashaya of the executive committee have endorsed the event and called on young people to come out in numbers.

According to the South African Coronavirus website, the age group of 18-34 has the lowest percentage of people that are fully vaccinated than other age groups, proving that there is a lot of vaccine hesitancy among the youth.
