The aim of this initiative is to empower the children in the community by playing sports and keep them off the streets.

Children can practice weekdays and Saturdays where they will play against each other.

Bringing a sporting code such as baseball to Eldorado Park is new and the children are not familiar with it.

Baseball coach, Achmat Larnie said that the kids are doing phenomenally well despite the fact that they are playing for the very first time.

“There is so much talent amongst the kids,” he said. This gives the children from the community an opportunity to compete with other teams and work hard to make it to the top where they can play in the Gauteng Baseball league.

“We are bringing back all the sports in our community; tennis, hockey, netball, volleyball, bowling for senior citizens and rugby,” said Lydia Thomas, Ward Committee Member for Sports, Culture and Youth.

The sponsors of the initiative are KFC, New Hyper Save, Four Brothers, Gauteng Lions, Councillor Dwain Ponsonby, Local Choice Pharmacy, Ashraf Woolaid and Ronelle Sameuls.

Amongst the attendees was MMC for Health and Social Development, Ashley Sauls.

“Baseball is a game with many rules, so for me if we can get our children from a young age to abide by the rules of this game, we can filter it through to develop them to know that life is all about rules.

“We have identified talent and will be working with these children in the baseball club,” concluded Larnie.
