WATCH: ‘History cannot be rewritten without education’ Joburg Mayor

The mayor said there is enough room for young people in government and they are needed in decision making positions.

The executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse has encouraged young people to use education to better their lives.

“History can not be rewritten without education.

“In 1976 young people died for our freedom and education.

“It is because of their sacrifice that I was able to go to medical school a   nd that many of us have education today,” said Mayor Phalatse.

The Mayor was speaking at the wreath laying ceremony in commemoration of Youth Day at the Hector Pieterson Memorial on Thursday morning.

This year marks 46 years since the Soweto Uprising and it comes at a time when youth unemployment is at an all time high.

The mayor said there is enough room for young people in government and they are needed in decision making positions.

Even in her office, the mayor said she works with the majority of young people who advise her and play an active role in decision making.

“Stop complaining and fighting.

“Government is not your enemy, we need your help.

“We honour you and we understand your power and value,” said the mayor to young people.

Phalatse ended by laying flowers on the memorial stone in honour f Hector Pieterson and the whole class of ‘76.
