ANC retains Ward 53 after by-elections

Various political parties continued campaigning and urging residents of Ward 53 to come in numbers to their different voting stations.

Regardless of the cold weather conditions, residents of Ward 53 came out in numbers for the by-elections at Lufhereng Primary School last Wednesday , June 1.

During voting, various political parties continued campaigning and urging residents of Ward 53 to come in numbers to their different voting stations.

A 58-year-old Lufhereng resident, Samuel Mafisa made his way to the voting station hoping to see change once the new councillor elected.

“All I want is the councillor to commit to the community and service delivery. Right now we don’t even have a playing ground for our children.

“The least they can do is create one. Let them work and stay away from corruption,” said Mafisa.

Mafisa also mentioned that when projects are introduced in the community, residents should be the first people to be considered for jobs.

A 22-year-old Luvuyo Moselenyane also made his way to the voting station to cast his vote with hopes of voting for change.

“As a community we are expecting new developments, especially a police station, a shopping centre and a development programme centre which will train and equip young people for the work environment while also imparting certain skills to them,” he added.

The ANC retained the ward but has showed a decline in support to below 40%, while opposition parties in the area grew in support.

The EFF showed a climb in support, followed by Action SA which has in a short period of time gained many supporters.

ANC attained an overall of 31.7%, while EFF obtained 23, 9%, followed by Action SA with 21, 9 %.
