The City of Johannesburg’s Housing Department has noted a hoax poster on social media which invited residents to a housing allocation event on Tuesday, March 29.

The post was fake and was not issued by the Department of Human Settlements. The department has not planned any allocation ceremony at 222 Smith Street in Braamfontein. The post doing rounds on social media reads as follows “City of Johannesburg hereby gives notice to people whom applied for RDP house in the year 1996/2020 an allocation of 1800 houses in different areas will take place”.

The department believes that the post was intended to cause disruptions to effective service delivery within the City of Johannesburg and in particular the Department of Housing by perpetrators who have the intention to undermine processes and procedures that the department has in place to address social housing challenges within the City.

Residents are reminded that the department will not invite qualifying beneficiaries to Braamfontein offices for the handover of units. The department would communicate directly with beneficiaries on when and where the ceremony will take place.

Residents are urged to always remain vigilant, scrutinise all the information they receive and follow only the official social media platforms of the City.

Any communication about the department will come out through the City’s official website and official social media platforms.

The department is calling on all community members to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the City of Johannesburg’s Group Forensic Investigating Services (GFIS) at Sappi Building, 48 Ameshoff Street, 6th floor in Braamfontein or call the fraud hotline number on 0800002587 or use email: whistle@joburg.org.za
