The handover was aimed at providing services in identified crime hot spot areas in Protea. According to the department, this is in line with the commitment made by Premier David Makhura during the State of the Province Address, to direct additional resources to the SAPS, to provide the much needed service delivery and also to assist in the fight against crime.

Before the handover, MEC MAzibuko mentioned that Protea Glen is experiencing a rise in contact crimes and this might be caused by the lack of police visibility within the community.

She mentioned places like Extension16, 26, 40, 42 which are far from the police station, making it almost impossible for residents with no cars to reach the station when they want to report a matter. She also engaged residents on how they can better utilise the new facility.

Mazibuko also encouraged the youth desk to be visible in all areas of Protea.

Councillor Phelelani Sindani addressing residents as MEC climbs the stairs to cut the ribbon and officially handover the SAPS mobile truck.

“There are quite a number of crimes that are committed here. Contact crimes, GBV, car hijackings, house burglaries and business robberies, this mobile station will make it easy for residents to report crime, rather than having to drive or take a taxi to a station,” said Mazibuko.

While addressing the media she said, “As Soweto is growing, there are areas which are being developed and are becoming further away from police stations, one of them happens to be Protea Glen Extension 26, spreading towards Lufhereng. These are areas which people cannot reach the police station. The mobile truck handed over will be working under Protea North, deployed to different crime spot areas on different days.”

The mobile police station will be visible to residents as it will be stationed on different areas. Residents can utilise the truck to certify their documents or report crime, as it will be rotating during the day.

The truck consists of water, basin and a holding cell which can accommodate up to five people.
