Goudpark Primary School foundation phase learners celebrated World Book Day on March 3. “World Book Day is all about celebrating the wonderful world of books and the joy of reading. It’s especially meant to help encourage a love of reading in children, but people of all ages can recognise and celebrate the day.

World Book Day has a strong connection with schools and it is used worldwide to allow children to engage with books and reading. It is important to celebrate days such as World Book Day as it fosters children’s growth as readers and promotes lifelong love for books,” said Rukshana Adams, the Departmental Head ECD/Foundation Phase at the school.

Sonia Elie also known as Die Boek Feetjie (DBF) dedicated her time to read stories to the Grade R and Grade 3 learners. She read to the learners in small groups outside of their classrooms.

“This was the first year that we celebrated World Book Day. The programme was in collaboration with Die Boek Feetjie initiative,” added Adams. The theme for the day was inspired by the words of Dr Suess who said, “The more you read, the more you will know, the more you learn the more places you will go.”

“We are looking forward to partnering with DBF to host a book fair at our school. The aim of the book fair is to give learners access to more books. Learners will get to choose and buy their own books. They will be exposed to storytelling, dramatization and dressing up as their favourite book characters. We urge parents to buy into and support this initiative,” said Adams.

In closing, Adams shared that she remembers someone saying that reading should not be presented to children as a chore or a duty but it should be offered as a gift.
