Community leader, Phillip Ratson has called on all residents of Eldorado Park to work together to create a better community. The community leader shared that he has been living in the community before the development of many existing extensions.

“I must say that I am very sad with how we are all living now, our community has never been so badly neglected,” he said. Ratson said teenage pregnancy is very common amongst school girls and the issue should be addressed at schools as well as at home.

“I wish that our parks, sports grounds and facilities can all be upgraded. We all hear about the budget but when money is allocated to certain projects, we do not see what that money is used for,” Ratson said.

The leader also took us to the swimming pool in Extension 8 that has been vandalised to show the damage that has been caused. He explained that the swimming pool was a place that everyone swam at and the facility played a big part in their childhood years.

The resident is concerned about the number of sporting facilities that have been vandalised in the community. “Where must the children have their sports if our facilities keep getting vandalised?” he asked.

Blocked drains, power outages, potholes, long grass and damaged streetlights are just some of the service delivery issues that the resident addressed. Ratson added that illegal dumping is getting worse in the community and suggested that since there are so many backyard dwellers, they should receive their own bins too so that there is not only one bin in the yard that multiple people use.

He also explained that services from Pikitup should be offered at least twice instead of once a week. “The water meters need to be replaced. I feel like the ones that we have are just a money-making scheme. There are residents with water bills that are higher than the value of their houses. The water meters break very easily and we are constantly seeing clean water flowing through our streets. Many residents are having issues with the water meters and the only solution that I see is to install new ones that can work properly. We are a poor community, how can we afford such high-water bills?” he added.

When asked if he has addressed these issues with the ward councillors, Ratson said the councillors are aware of the issues in the community and since they are still new, he does not want residents blaming them for the issues.

Ratson also expressed concerns over the fact that job opportunities are only given to the youth between 18 and 35 years old. “What happens to those who are older and unemployed?” he asked.

Ratson said that the government should also implement equality rules when it comes to job opportunities. “We as residents need to work together to create a better community, that is the only solution to everything. We need to hold people accountable and we need to get things done. Corruption needs to stop in our community,” concluded Ratson.
