A video and pictures showing the clash between the police and church goers circulated on social media. The arrest by the JMPD officer of the leader, Pastor Mpfariseni Mukhuba and some church members also trended on Twitter.

A criminal case was open against them and they are charged with public violence, assault GBH, and malicious damage to property. The case is still pending.

It is said by the church members that they have had several run-ins in the past with the JMPD from 2010 to recent times, including the incident. The encounters were due to alleged noise complaints made by the neighbours.

The church body claims that residences built next to them were done so illegally but they are in a buffer zone of an industrial area.

The spokesperson of the church, Advocate MoAfrica Maila said, “The church has video footage evidencing the violation of constitutionally guaranteed human rights and the type of harassment that the church and its congregants had endured in the hands of the JMPD.”
