Eldo’s Robotics and Coding back for round 2

Eldo’s Robotics and Coding reopened a few weeks ago to offer the programme to the children of Eldorado Park.

The Eldorado Park Robotics and Coding programme officially reopened this month and the team is excited to see the children shine in 2022.

Alicia Solomons who is one of the coaches shared that last year it was their first project and everything was still unfamiliar to them but this year their administration and technical aspects have improved.

The coaches shared that their logistics suffer mainly because they have no main venue to host their programme every Saturday. However, they are currently making use of the Don Mateman Hall.

This year the team has close to 200 children who are registered for these free classes. Last year their children won the First Lego League Southern Gauteng Cup.

Head challenge coach, Algernon Michaels said, “We would like to compete again this year in the regional and national robot games. For us currently, the challenge is the financial implications of taking our teams to those levels but we hope to raise the funds and gain some support from the community and local businesses.”

Last year’s theme was centred on wellness and exercise and this year’s theme is cargo connect which deals with logistics and transportation. The team had a great response from people willing to train as coaches; however, Solomons encourages more residents to get involved and go qualify to become coaches.

“The robotics programme that we offer allows our community to have access to something that would have only been available to those who could afford the equipment or if your child attended a private or model C school.

We have seen this programme teach kids that they are allowed to be who they are and go against the norm. We would like to see a greater reach, interest and acceptance in our community for S.T.E.M (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics). Success in this will make discipline in Eldos a norm,” concluded Michaels.
