The event took place on Friday, February 11. “As a radio station, we have a role in supporting and developing communities. Our focus for this year is early childhood development because this is the stage where you start building confidence. So, we have realised that with schools like this one, no fee schools, children come from disadvantaged backgrounds and parents can’t afford to buy them school shoes. Our aim is to be consistent with this initiate and expand it to more than just shoe donations,” said Kaya FM’s Managing Director, Sibongile Mtyali.

About 700 pairs of Sneakers and 300 pairs of school shoes were donated to learners in Grade R to Grade 3 through this collaboration. “We are responsive towards initiatives like the #Back2School campaign to help balance the scales and play a role in securing their economic inclusion and a better future,” said Georgett Naidoo – CSI Specialist at CCBSA.

“As a business, we cannot ignore the state of education in South Africa, the extreme challenges the system has faced and how the Covid -19 pandemic has impacted it over the last two years and to recover, we need all hands-on deck. We all know that the growth of any country is linked to its young people having access to good education, and we appreciate that the work of dealing with challenges in our education system cannot rest on government alone,” said Nozicelo Ngcobo, CCBSA Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability Director.

Adding excitement and smiles as they broadcast live from the primary school grounds, flagship breakfast show hosts Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe from Thomas & Skhumba In The Mornings said that they were proud of being part of this initiative. They also said that they have been talking about it on their morning show and they’ve received positive feedback and more people want to get involved.

“I think such initiatives should take place more often and we should promote the culture of giving back. It doesn’t have to be something big, whatever you can do to give back even if it’s just four pairs of shoes is enough because to those receiving, it means a lot,” said Hlophe. “Just seeing the smiles on these children’s faces makes me happy.

This gives me hope, you never know how far these children go because of these donations and they will definitely remember this day. I am proud to be part of this,” said Msengana. Ditawana Primary School Principal, Nomasonto Luvuno expressed her deepest gratitude and shared that the school was once forgotten because they did not have a lot of learners and the initiative will definitely put the school on the map.
