Osuagwu was interviewed by us in 2020 when he was still playing rugby for the Varsity Cup team at the University of Johannesburg and the U21 Currie Cup for the Xerox Lions.

The 22-year-old shared that he found out that he would be part of the Golden Lions side for the 2022 Currie Cup Premier Division back in November.

“It is a privilege and an honour in which I thank God for providing me with the opportunity and also blessing me with this talent. I am grateful. I’ll take it one step at a time, and whenever an opportunity presents itself, I pray that I may be ready to grab it with both hands,” said Osuagwu.

Now that he’s playing on the professional side, Osuagwu shared that there is more pressure but he is always reminded by his mother that ‘where much is given much is required’. “The major difference for me personally is the detail and knowing your job in terms of your position and also what plays to play and decisions that come with it with regards to the different areas on the pitch,” he added.

Osuagwu is currently in his third year at the University of Johannesburg and is completing his course in Human Resources. In 2020 he visited his former high school, Kliptown Secondary to talk to the learners and more recently has visited Saint Ives Primary School for a talk with the Grade 7 leaners as they are moving towards their senior phase of the school system.

“To date, my most memorable match has to be my first professional match. My debut against Western province this year. Within last year I thought about leaving the sport and as they call it “hanging my boots” a lot was going on, it was Covid and also no games were being played. It also wasn’t really a good year in terms of rugby for me, my mind wasn’t in the right space with regards to having that desire to play again. At the right time God relit that fire and reminded me of where I come from and the dreams and mission, I personally have for myself. Jeremiah 29 verse 11 kept me strong, whenever I was in doubt,” he shared.

In his spare time, Osuagwu finds himself listening to music, resting, or catching up on series or movies if he’s not spending time with family and friends. His major plan for this year is to graduate and also to play good rugby so that more opportunities may present themselves.
